Walter Clifford WellsThe End of an Era . . . . .
MR WALTER CLIFFORD (CLIFF) WELLS 09.08.28 ~ 05.02.13It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Mr Walter Clifford Wells (Cliff), peacefully in his sleep on 5th February 2013, at the age of 84. Mr Wells founded W. Wells & Son back in 1957, as a tarpaulin and cover making business, rapidly expanding to become the leading manufacturer in the country of fairground ride 'tilts' or covers. His wife worked by his side and through very hard years, they built up the business together, until the birth of their son Stephen. He added marquee hire to the business and when Stephen, who had joined him in the company on leaving school, decided that he would like to take over that side and expand it they worked together to build up a thriving business. Soon the marquee side and the tarpaulin and cover making side grew and grew, and the decision was taken to split the two sides, and make them completely separate companies, though still operating from the same offices. Thus, Wells & Son Marquees Ltd was born. Both sides continued in this vein until Mr Wells decided at the age of 77, to "retire". The manufacturing business of W. Wells & Son was sold, to Diane and Andy Bates who have continued the company in the name of Wells Tarpaulins Ltd, and as Diane worked with us for many years before finally buying the business, they are continuing in the same vein, with some of the same loyal staff who had been with us for many years. Wells & Son Marquees Ltd is still run by Steve Wells and his wife Jan, and Mr Wells was frequently to be found after his "retirement" up in the workshop making all the interior linings for the marquees, or next door helping Diane with measurements on a drawing for a complicated fairground tilt. Clifford Wells founded a business based on honesty, integrity and honour, and instilled these virtues into all that worked for him. He was a wonderful man, and highly respected all over the Country. He will be very sadly missed, not only by his heartbroken wife, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter, but by all who knew him. The funeral will be held on Friday 22nd February 2013, 10.45am at Boston Stump Followed by a private family cremation. Refreshments will be served following the church service at Funeral arrangements will be handled by Family flowers only please, but donations can be made to:- JANUARY 2012 NEWSHappy New Year everyone! December 2010Lincolnshire Christmas Market - Trade Stands May we sincerely thank all our loyal customers, for appreciating our situation regarding the cancellation of the Lincoln Christmas Market. As you are all aware, this event was cancelled the day before it was due to start, and unfortunately, after we had completed all the work. We were genuinely hoping that we would be able to discount your invoices a little as a gesture of goodwill to you, our customers, but having calculated the actual costs of erecting all the trade stands, the cost of the work was considerably more than the total invoiced amount. This, unfortunately, made this gesture impossible to implement. Our lads had to work much longer hours to meet the deadlines (in sub-zero temperatures and very heavy snow), and more time was lost on the roads, due to the weather conditions with hills being impassable, and slow moving traffic, which also added considerably to our fuel costs. We thank you all for bearing with us, and although we have all had to stand a loss on this year's event, let us look forward to a better year next year. May we take this opportunity of wishing all our customers, past, present and future, a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.
